Hyosung Heavy Industries is partnering with ST Telemedia Global Data Centre (STT GDC) to target the domestic data center market, which is expected to grow to 20 trillion won ($15 billion) by 2030.

On June 17, Hyosung announced that its joint venture with STT GDC, named Hyosung-STT GDC, has opened the STT Seoul 1 hyper-scale data center in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, designed to support cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Headquartered in Singapore, STT GDC operates a portfolio of over 100 data centers across 12 countries in Asia and Europe, with approximately 2.3 gigawatts of IT capacity.

STT Seoul 1 combines Hyosung's power solutions expertise with STT GDC's global standards in design, operation, and service. The 30MW facility is built to accommodate various cloud and AI demands, capable of handling increasingly complex high-density workloads.

A key feature of STT Seoul 1 is its ability to provide up to 30MW of IT capacity in a city where securing power is challenging. While recent energy regulations and supply chain constraints have led many large data centers to relocate to the outskirts of the capital or to provincial areas, STT Seoul 1 aims to differentiate itself by being located in the heart of Seoul.

Security and reliability have been enhanced to global standards. The facility has implemented security measures to guard against external intrusions and natural disasters, establishing a system to proactively manage potential threats and operational risks.

At the opening ceremony, Chairman Cho Hyun-joon stated, "I have long believed that data will become the 'oil of the 21st century.' We will grow the data center business into a new growth engine for Hyosung, transforming the paradigm of the global AI ecosystem beyond South Korea."

Cho is focusing the group's core competencies on the AI data center business. Hyosung Heavy Industries aims to ensure operational stability and energy efficiency in AI data centers by leveraging its expertise in high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and energy efficiency technologies. Additionally, the company plans to systematically acquire specialized technologies and construction know-how for AI data centers, building on its experience with liquefied gas plants and hydrogen charging stations.

Hyosung ITX will integrate its existing IT business expertise in cloud, content delivery networks (CDN), and digital transformation solutions into the overall operation of the AI data center. By establishing traffic optimization and security management systems, the company aims to enhance the technical reliability and stability of the AI data center.

According to market research firm Research and Markets, the domestic data center market is projected to expand from $5.04 billion (approximately 7.4 trillion won) in 2025 to $16.23 billion (approximately 23.8 trillion won) by 2031, with an average annual growth rate of 21.5%.
