Samsung Electronics' largest union, the Samsung Group Corporate Labor Union, has voted to reappoint Chairman Choi Seung-ho.
On June 30, the union announced that 38,336 out of 54,165 eligible voters participated in the electronic voting, resulting in an approval rate of 87.5% (33,550 votes) for Choi's reappointment. The voter turnout was 70.8%.
Voting took place from June 24 until 10 a.m. on June 30, covering two main issues: the reappointment of the chairman and amendments to the union's regulations.
Choi requested reappointment, stating he would take responsibility for the outcomes of this year's wage negotiations. He outlined his reappointment pledges, which include pushing for negotiations focused on the Device Solutions (DS) sector by 2027, separating the negotiation unit for the DS sector, and securing the status of worker representatives.
He also indicated that even if separate negotiations are not recognized, the union would pursue independent negotiations rather than joint negotiations with other unions.
Previously, the joint negotiation team, which includes the corporate union, reached a tentative agreement with Samsung Electronics last month that included an average wage increase of 6.2%, the establishment of a special performance bonus, and a housing loan program.
However, dissatisfaction over the distribution of bonuses has led to an increase in union member departures, with complaints arising not only from the Device Experience (DX) sector, which handles finished products, but also from employees in the DS sector's System LSI and Foundry divisions.
Currently, the corporate union is primarily composed of semiconductor employees. At one point during the wage negotiation process, the union's membership exceeded 76,000, securing a majority status, but it has since lost that status. As of 1 p.m. the previous day, the membership stood at 55,200.
