The government is launching a video contest that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to envision the future of regions transformed by local growth engines.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on October 5 that it will hold the 'Future Map of 5 Poles and 3 Special Growth Engines' AI video contest from October 6 to November 13.
The government is promoting a strategy called '5 Poles and 3 Special' to foster self-sustaining economic zones in local areas, moving away from a single-pole system centered on the capital region. During the 10th Central-Local Cooperation Conference on August 26, three to four strategic industries were selected as 'growth engines' based on the industrial foundation and growth potential of each region.
Following this, last month, the government launched the 'Local-led Growth Engine Council,' which includes the Ministry of Trade and 13 local governments. The council aims to support local investments in growth engines through a 'seven-pillar policy support package' that includes finance, taxation, systems, talent, technology, and infrastructure.
This contest is intended to promote the 5 Poles and 3 Special growth strategy to the public as the government embarks on significant projects. Participants must choose one of seven regions: Central, Southwest, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Southeast, Jeonbuk, Gangwon, or Jeju. They are required to create an AI video that reflects the unique characteristics of the chosen region's industrial base, resources, research and development capabilities, and infrastructure, showcasing how the growth engine will transform industrial sites and residents' lives.
The focus is on illustrating the future changes brought by the growth engine rather than merely describing technologies or products. There are no restrictions on formats, which can range from vlogs depicting future daily life to time-slip comparisons of the present and future, web dramas, or mockumentaries.
Anyone residing in South Korea can participate as individuals or in teams of up to four. Submissions must be videos between 30 seconds and 2 minutes long, accompanied by a video file, a project plan, and details on AI usage. Judging will be based on six criteria: relevance to the theme, creativity, use of AI, understanding of policies, completeness, and public appeal.
Each of the seven regions will award one grand prize, one excellence award, and one encouragement award, totaling 21 works. The grand prize winner will receive a gift certificate worth 2 million won, the excellence award will receive 1 million won, and the encouragement award will receive 500,000 won. Winning entries will also be used in future AI promotional videos and at local festivals and exhibitions. The results will be announced on November 30, with an awards ceremony scheduled for December.
Park Dong-il, head of the Ministry's Industrial Policy Office, stated, "This is an opportunity for citizens to freely imagine the future of their regions and collaboratively envision how Korea will change through growth engines. We hope to see a variety of ideas about our region's future using AI as a new creative tool."
