The state-run [North] Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the test of a "new-type super-speed precisely guided torpedo weapon," dubbed the Zam-2.0, took place earlier in the week to verify technical improvements to the weapon, calling it a "significant step" toward strengthening the country's naval capabilities.
According to KCNA, the test conducted on Thursday demonstrated the performance of the weapon's rocket propulsion system and core technologies, which have been tested more than 180 times over the past five years.
KCNA also said the torpedo uses AI technology to guide the weapon and detect targets, but provided no technical details or evidence to support the claims. It did not disclose the torpedo's range, speed, operational capabilities or where the test took place.
The latest test comes as North Korea continues to modernize its naval forces and expand its range of weapons systems through the development of submarine-launched missiles and new warships.
North Korea's claims about the AI-powered Zam-2.0 raise concerns that such technology could make underwater threats harder to detect and track. It remains unclear, however, how extensively AI is used in the weapon or how effective it is.
