According to the state-run [North] Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was a "big success," as it claimed that the upgrade would significantly improve the performance of the country's offensive weapons systems. However, it provided no further details about the missile or the component being tested.
The test came a day after South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected multiple ballistic missile launches from the North toward the East Sea, with one missile traveling more than 900 kilometers.
It was North Korea's 16th ballistic missile launch of this year, coming about nine days after its previous launch on Oct. 3.
The latest test also came after South Korea announced last week that it had successfully test-fired a domestically developed hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), an advanced weapon designed to travel at speeds of Mach 5 or faster and maneuver along unpredictable trajectories, potentially making it harder to intercept.
