SEOUL, October 21 (AJP) - Samsung Electronics has outlined infrastructure needs for a planned semiconductor cluster in Gwangju, including international schools, wider roads and recycled wastewater facilities, according to the local government Wednesday.
The requests came during a visit by officials from the Gwangju-Jeonnam Special Metropolitan Government to Samsung's Pyeongtaek semiconductor campus on Tuesday.
Samsung representatives stressed the need for international or foreign schools to accommodate employees' families, roads with at least eight lanes to handle factory traffic and materials shipments, and facilities to reuse treated wastewater for chip production, according to the city.
The local government plans to review the requests and consider incorporating them into infrastructure plans for the proposed semiconductor complex.
Semiconductor fabrication plants require vast quantities of ultrapure water to clean silicon wafers during manufacturing, making a reliable water supply and wastewater treatment capacity essential to large-scale chip production.
The discussions highlight the extensive supporting infrastructure required for large-scale chip manufacturing, where access to water, transportation and skilled workers can be as critical as the factories themselves.
