The company said Monday it held a completion ceremony for its "Heroes' Home" project in Hatay Province, Türkiye, on Thursday, marking the first stage of a housing assistance program scheduled to run through 2029.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with South Korean nonprofit organizations Walk Together and the Community Chest of Korea, aims to improve living conditions for Korean War veterans and their families through home renovations, reconstruction and the provision of household necessities.
Türkiye sent the fourth-largest contingent of troops to the Korean War after the United States, Britain and Canada, establishing a longstanding relationship with South Korea that has led the two countries to describe each other as brother nations.
Among the beneficiaries was Korean War veteran Mehmet Seker, who volunteered to serve in Korea at a young age after hearing news of the conflict.
He served as an artillery soldier in the first Turkish contingent sent to Korea in 1950 and returned to combat after recovering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
Hyundai Rotem supported renovation work, including concrete foundation repairs, floor tile restoration and exterior wall plastering.
"I am deeply grateful to Hyundai Rotem for remembering our sacrifices and providing meaningful support," Seker said.
Hyundai Rotem also renovated the home of another veteran, Selim Aslanurek, repairing its foundation and improving its interior and exterior.
Three additional homes were newly built for the families of deceased veterans Davut Avci, Halil Demirtas and Samih Cekici. Their surviving relatives had been living in temporary accommodation following earthquake damage, according to Hyundai Rotem.
Thursday's ceremony was attended by South Korean defense attaché Lee Sim-pyo, Korean community representatives in Türkiye, Korean War veterans and officials from Hyundai Rotem.
"As a defense company, we will continue to fulfill our social responsibilities and carry out various community initiatives that connect countries and local communities," a Hyundai Rotem official said
Hyundai Rotem has supported veterans and their families through social contribution programs since 2017, beginning with mobility assistance equipment for military veterans.
