Egyptians began to vote on Tuesday (local time) in a constitutional referendum, according to news reports.

The two-day vote is considered the first step in the country’s democratic transition since Islamist President Mohamed Morsi’s downfall in July last year following massive protests against his one-year rule.

The referendum is also seen as an event likely to spawn a presidential bid by Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who engineered Mursi’s ouster.

About 52.7 million people are eligible to vote at 3,317 polling stations across the country.
