"Snowpiercer," a South Korean post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, was the second highest grossing movie in China, with its ticket sales amounting to 8.2 billion won (47.1 million Chinese yuan), the film’s distributor, CJ E&M, said Tuesday.

3-D Hollywood action film "Need for Speed" took the top spot in the China’s box office.

Based on the French graphic novel "Le Transperceneige," the thriller was released at theaters across China on March 17.

The film has opened in 10 countries including France, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Italy, and is scheduled to be released in North America, the world's largest movie market, on June 27.

The movie, directed by Bong Joon-ho, stars actor Song Kang-ho and actress Ko Ah-sung, both of South Korea; and Hollywood stars Chris Evans, Ed Harris and Octavia Spencer; and Jamie Bell and Tilda Swinton, both British.
