In 2011, the U.K. government placed space weather on the National Risk Register of Civil Emergencies.
Chris Train, director of resilience at the National Grid which is using the Space Weather Forecasting Center's data, told Sky News: "This is fantastic for us, for two reasons.
"First, we can better forecast and have better responses to coronal mass ejections to minimize the impact on infrastructure.
"Second, it builds up a body of expertise to take forward the science and understanding of space weather."
