"BTS are leading the Korean wave in the music scene all over the world," EMA said on its website.
The selection was based on votes cast on the website by music fans around the world to choose their local favorite artists.
BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, will compete with others, such as Dempagumi.inc of Japan, Jane Zhang of China and Jay Chou of Taiwan, for Worldwide Act representing Asia. BTS plans to hold a concert at the SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium of the Olympic Park in southern Seoul from Nov. 27 to Nov. 29.
Six Worldwide Act winners, each representing Africa/India, Australia/New Zealand, Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia, will be announced at the MTV EMA in Milan, Italy, Oct. 25.
