The company said Friday that it signed a contract with the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality in July and has begun development. The project covers one logistics support ship, two surface rescue ships and one submarine rescue ship.
The new EO/IR equipment is intended to improve the ships' ability to identify objects at sea and navigate safely at night or in poor weather. Unlike combat vessels, which are generally equipped with electro-optical tracking systems, support and rescue ships were not originally designed with such equipment, making operations more difficult when visibility is limited.
To overcome space limitations on existing vessels, Hanwha Systems will adapt technology from its Target Acquisition and Designation System (TADS) developed for South Korea's Light Armed Helicopter program. The system's compact and lightweight design makes it suitable for retrofitting onto ships that were not originally built to carry electro-optical equipment.
TADS is used on helicopters for reconnaissance, target detection, identification and engagement. Hanwha Systems said the system has already met military standards and demonstrated reliability in operating environments ranging from minus 35 degrees Celsius to 55 degrees Celsius.
The company has about 40 years of experience developing electro-optical systems and supplies EOTS and infrared search-and-track systems for ROK Navy combat vessels.
