Police Increase Security at Incheon Airport Ahead of South Korea's Return from World Cup

South Korea's national soccer team is set to return home after failing to advance to the knockout stage of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup. In anticipation of their arrival, security at Incheon International Airport will be significantly increased.

The Incheon Police Agency announced on June 29 that 160 officers from the riot police and airport police will be deployed to the airport on June 30, the day the team returns.

Incheon International Airport Corporation will also send 25 special security personnel and staff to the site to prepare for any unexpected situations.

This heightened security comes in response to threatening messages directed at coach Hong Myung-bo that have appeared on online forums.

Meanwhile, the South Korean team finished the tournament ranked 34th, marking their lowest position in World Cup history after failing to reach the top 32.

In light of this outcome, Coach Hong announced his resignation. During a press conference held at the team's training base in Chivas Valle Verde, Mexico, he stated, "I will step down as the head coach today. However, I will not abandon my passion for South Korean soccer. I sincerely hope our team can grow into one that earns the trust and love of the people again."
