Samsung Electronics will start domestic production of its EHS heat pump boilers, which were previously manufactured overseas. This move aims to establish a production base to respond to the domestic heating electrification market while accelerating the deployment of heat pumps in real residential environments.
The company announced on August 24 that it has set up a production line covering 2,132 square meters at its second campus in Gwangju and began trial production on August 19. After verifying process stability and product quality, full-scale production is expected to commence in September.
The new production line has an annual capacity of over 100,000 units, all of which will be supplied to the domestic market. Samsung is the first heat pump manufacturer participating in the domestic heating electrification project to relocate its production base from overseas to South Korea. This transition is anticipated to enhance the speed of product supply and quality response to changes in domestic market demand.
The EHS heat pump boiler utilizes air heat and electricity to provide heating and hot water. It achieves a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of 4.9 under 35-degree outlet conditions, producing more thermal energy than the electrical energy consumed. It is considered a viable technology to replace fossil fuel-based boilers.
In addition to domestic production, Samsung is also expanding product demonstrations. Following its participation in the heating electrification project in Jeju this year, the company plans to take part in a second distribution project involving 1,418 households in the second half of the year. In Yangpyeong, Chungju, and Namhae, the company is verifying heating and hot water performance and energy efficiency based on actual residential environments.
Samsung is also exploring the feasibility of applying its products in multi-family housing. In Jeju and Yongin, the Samsung C&T Residential Research Institute is demonstrating the EHS All-in-One solution, which provides cooling, heating, and hot water as a single system. This verification aims to expand the application range to include not only single-family homes but also apartments and other multi-family housing.
Samsung plans to leverage the manufacturing capabilities of its Gwangju facility, which has experience in producing refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, to expand its domestic heat pump business. The company aims to respond to domestic market demands and promote the popularization of heat pumps.
Lim Sung-taek, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' DA Division, stated, "By establishing a domestic production system for heat pump products, we will actively respond to the trend of heating electrification and accelerate business expansion. We will combine our technological expertise accumulated in the global market with domestic manufacturing and service competitiveness to present solutions optimized for the Korean residential environment."
