"The Devil’s Plan: Dead Again" will premiere on Netflix on Nov. 10. The 14-episode season will feature 16 players, including previous winners and veterans of some of Korea’s best-known survival shows. It will roll out over three weeks, starting with five episodes at 5 p.m. KST.
The franchise debuted in September 2023, followed by its second season, "The Devil’s Plan: Death Room," in May 2025. The first season featured 12 contestants, while the second expanded the field to 14.
Previous seasons largely favored players without extensive survival-show experience. Producer Jeong Jong-yeon said he deliberately abandoned that approach this time.
"I thought about breaking some of the standards I had used in making survival shows," Jeong said at a press conference in Seoul.
Jeong said he began by asking what would happen if experienced players were given another chance.
That led him first to previous winners, then to players who had created major turning points in other survival shows, and finally to newcomers capable of competing with them.
Among the 16 are Season 1 winner Ha Seok-jin and Season 2 winner Jeong Hyun-gyu, along with Jang Dong-min, Hong Jin-ho and Oh Hyun-min, all familiar names in Korean survival television.
Casting Jang posed a particular challenge.
Jeong said Jang’s reputation was so strong that there was a risk the spotlight could shift toward him alone. He likened Jang to Michael Jordan, arguing that his presence also created the possibility of plays few others could produce.
Instead of avoiding that imbalance, the production team built a stronger field around him.
Oh, who formed a well-known alliance with Jang on “The Genius,” was part of that calculation. Jeong said the aim was to create an environment where Jang could play at full strength.
Oh said the lineup also eliminated something that can weaken a survival show: an obvious underdog.
"If super plays make survival shows more entertaining, I think an overwhelmingly weak player does the opposite," adding "Among these 16, there was no overwhelmingly weak player."
The producers also changed the elimination system.
In previous seasons, contestants who lost all of their Pieces, the show’s in-game currency and strategic resource, were eliminated. That will no longer happen automatically.
Producer Choi Yun-hee said the change was designed to make the games themselves determine who stays.
"This season, even if you lose all your Pieces, you are not eliminated," Choi said. "The players’ fate is decided through the games."
Movement between the show’s living and prison areas has also been loosened after producers found that earlier seasons could leave contestants stuck in the same positions for too long.
Together, the changes place more weight on the games themselves.
Jang said he felt the difference immediately.
"It felt almost as if they were weighing the brain itself," he said.
The first two seasons relied not only on puzzles and calculations but also on alliances, accumulated resources and the social dynamics created inside the set. "Dead Again" keeps those elements, but gives the games a greater role in deciding who survives.
The title also reflects the new cast.
Jeong said "Dead Again" can be read as experienced survival players returning to "die" a second time, competitors who already know what elimination feels like choosing to enter another game.
For Jang, there was little hesitation about returning.
"As long as I’m alive, there is no retirement from survival shows," he said.
