Of the total fake bills reported to the Bank of Korea (BOK) in 2014, 1,351 or 35 percent were collected from the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives' branch in Hwagok-dong, Seoul, in September, the BOK said. All of them were 50,000-won notes.
Of them, 1,484 or 39 percent were 5,000-won notes, followed by 50,000-won bills (1,405 or 36.9 percent), 10,000-won notes (872 or 22.9 percent) and 1,000-won bills (47 or 1.2 percent).
The number of fakes per 1 million banknotes reached 0.9 last year, down from 2,2 in 2012, 3.1 in 2009 and 6.1 in 2006.
In 2011, a total of 10,053 counterfeit bills were reported. The figure dropped to 8,628 in 2012 and further to a record low of 3,588 in 2013, before rising to 3,808 last year.
