The domestically produced supersonic light fighter FA-50 successfully completed its first formation flight with the multipurpose drone AAP. This achievement is expected to enhance the tactical utility of drones in ground reconnaissance, electronic warfare, deception, and strike missions.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced on October 12 that the FA-50 and the AAP conducted a 20-minute formation flight at an altitude of approximately 7,000 feet (about 2.1 km) over the waters south of Goheung, Jeollanam-do, on October 8. The two aircraft maintained a stable distance of 30 to 100 feet (about 9 to 30 meters) while flying at a speed of 360 km/h.

This test was conducted to confirm the potential for collaboration between manned and unmanned aircraft. The AAP is a high-speed drone weighing 150 kg, developed by KAI through its own investment since 2024. It is a small aircraft measuring 3.1 meters in length and 2.2 meters in wingspan, with a maximum flight speed of 790 km/h powered by a jet engine. It has been undergoing flight tests since its maiden flight in early October last year.

KAI is enhancing the AAP's autonomous flight technology by applying an AI pilot named 'KAiLOT.' The AAP aims to perform various missions, including reconnaissance, electronic warfare, deception, and strikes, in cooperation with manned fighter jets. It is expected to improve operational capabilities in areas that are difficult for manned aircraft to enter.

Based on the data obtained from this formation flight, KAI plans to advance its manned-unmanned integrated system (MUM-T) technology. The company intends to demonstrate control of the AAP from the FA-50 during flight and secure the necessary technologies for future development of unmanned combat aircraft (MUCCA).

KAI CEO Kim Jong-chul stated, "This formation flight is significant as it confirms the operational potential of a manned-unmanned integrated system through actual flights of manned and unmanned aircraft for the first time in the country. We will continue to develop related technologies to contribute to the advancement of future air power."

Meanwhile, KAI delivered the first production unit of the Korean fighter jet KF-21 to the Air Force last month. A total of 40 units will be delivered sequentially by 2028, with the Air Force planning to fully operationalize the KF-21 for combat missions.
